In the 1950’s and 1960’s, Villamaggiore was the greatest village in the area of Lacchiarella, with around 450 inhabitants. In the 1970’s and 1980’s it had become almost completely uninhabited, and the abandoned Villamaggiore farmstead, a handsome example of rural architecture in the Po Valley, risked destruction.
In 2003, the council approved two renovation projects for the area: an approved building project for 25 new apartments and a renovation project involving a further 135 apartments. The new village, which will include shops, parks, sports facilities and a new road layout, will be completed by 2015.
In addition to the renovated apartments, the village will also offer a Wellness Center and a wood of about 8 hectares, with some 3,000 trees. The old settlement, which lies close to the railway station, will also be refurbished.
